Effects of Clodronate(Ostac^(¢ç)) on Hyperalcemia and Bone Pain Complicated with Cancer Patient

Abstract
Hypercalcima and bone pain are the most common problems in the management of many patients with cancer. Clodronate (dichloromethylene bisphosphonate) is potent inhibitor of osteoclastic bone resorption. We have used clodronate orally and intravenously as a therapy for hypercalcemia and bone pain in 10 patients with malignancy. The serum calcium level in 4 hypercalcemic patients returned to the normal range within 2 weeks. Bone pain in 6 patients ameliorated to tolerable level and the use of analgesics was also reduced within 2 to 4 weeks. One of the side effect of clodronate was a hypocalcemia, which was improved after discontinued. Therefore, orally and intravenously administered clodronate appears to be effective and safe therapy for hypercalcemia and bone pain in patients with malignancy.
